Destroyer of the Band Cohesion...Girlfriends
If you have played music in a band for any time at all you know that the number one problem outside of illicit drugs and alcohol abuse is band member's girlfriends. How you handle the problems brought on by this situation will determine the longevity of the band. First and foremost, keep your hands off of your buddy's girl. When everything is peachy and everyone is having a great time there is a lot of flirting going on. Do not get caught up in this game. You and all of the members are either serious about this venture or not. If you are serious, sit down and discuss this from the very start. And I know you and the others will say, "Man, I would never do that to you dude." But believe me it happens all the time. And bands can not stay together with this kind of baggage. Do not end up thinking about what could have been if you had only refrained from accepting the advances of a girl. I don't care what she looks like. Next, keep practices private. There is nothing worse than someone's girlfriend being present and thinking that she knows what is best for her boyfriend. And remember, she has a lot of influence on this guy when you are not around. As a matter of fact, being what we are and all, a band member has got to have a level of dedication that surpasses even the most menial of human urges. You just do not need the distraction around. Get this straight first. And while we are at it, run this like a good marriage. When you get marriage down neither spouse will complain about the other in public. You treat her like a queen and she treats you like a king in public. Never air your dirty laundry. Same goes with a band. All complaints should be held in private and all respect should be given to your brothers in crime while you are partners in this adventure. Last, never travel with a girlfriend on board. It seems like fun at first. But it ain't. Oh she will want to come if at all possible. Even if it is a one night stand only sixty minutes from home base, tell her to meet you there. You should always travel to and from the gig with the band. She will be jealous of other women and you will have to have your priorities in order. Just don't put her in a bad spot. Respect her totally or break up. But never let your feelings for a girlfriend interfere with you work. If you adhere to these most basic of rules you will find that you will have a better chance of keeping a band together. There is nothing worse than wasting years of work with some guys because you were not smart enough on the front end to foresee these difficulties.
